Some important tips for Home alarm System

Updated: Apr 10, 2020

Burglaries do not only affect others. Every year, in US, around 240,000 are registered, or one every minute and a half and their number is constantly increasing. Consequently, it is advisable to ensure the protection of your home by installing a high- performance alarm system.

Installing an alarm system at home: for what purpose?

The main purpose is, of course, the protection of your home against intrusion. There are many types of alarms for the home with different modes of operation. A siren-type sound alarm is deterrent in 95% of the cases: it is therefore an effective system to guarantee the safety of your assets. However, your security alarm system can also alert you in the event of an intrusion, by phone or by notification on a Smartphone, or be connected to a surveillance company that intervenes on the spot in the event of an alarm. Integrated with a home automation installation, your security system can even simulate a presence in the house in case of intrusion in the property, for example by raising the blinds or turning on the lights of the house.

Another type of alarm is to ensure the safety of property and people. Equipped with a heat or smoke detector, it can make a siren sound in the event of a fire. Connected to a home automation system, the alarm can therefore facilitate the evacuation of the occupants by opening the doors or shutters of the house.

How to choose the best alarm for your home?

There are numerous types of alarms to ensure the security of your home. With or without wires, internal or external, with or without camera, with motion or opening detector ... How to choose the most suitable alarm system for the size and characteristics of your home? Here are the different criteria for an effective home protection system!

With or without alarm siren? The audible alarms are dissuasive but can be useless if the house is isolated and you and your neighbors are absent. A system that warns you even from a distance can therefore be preferable.

Detection of movement or opening? It all depends on the configuration of the house. An alarm with a motion detector senses the movements through radar, photoelectric or infrared sensors. The siren of the opening detector is activated when a door or a window is opened, when the magnetic beam of the system is interrupted. There are also alarms with glass break detectors. It's up to you to choose the most suitable detectors based on your home configuration.

Alarm system with or without camera? In the event of an intrusion, the security systems with camera activate the recording of a video that can allow the police to identify the thieves or a particular modus operandi. These remote surveillance files are also a proof of burglary for your insurance company. Equipped with an infrared system, the surveillance camera also works at night, offering constant protection.

Alarm with internal or external detector? With the detectors around the house, identify intrusions in the garden and ensure protection not only of the house, but also of the garage or the tool shed, for example. External systems or systems with detectors distributed around the house are therefore preferable. Thanks to this technology, you have more time to alert the police before the thieves enter the house.

Animal-compatible alarm: If you have pets, choose a motion detector or a surveillance camera suitable for not activating the alarm or siren when your animals are close to the detectors! Some systems offer technological options that can distinguish the passage of animals from that of humans.

Wireless or wired alarm: The installation of a wired alarm system requires minor electrical work to make the cable pass, but its operation is very reliable. An alarm Wireless involves a simpler installation and can be moved later as there is no need to move any cables, but it is necessary to correctly position the detectors and the control panel to benefit from a good connection, be it via radio waves or Wi-Fi. If the distance between the detectors and the control panel installed in the home is excessive, the technology may not work.

An infallible home alarm system

Experienced thieves are aware of the potential presence of an alarm system. If it is visible, they will try to neutralize it. Therefore carefully choose the position of the device so that it is not very visible and collects the alarm cables in the wall so that it cannot be disconnected.

Some alarms warn you in case of attempted interruption of the telephone line or connection, or if a radio disturbance system tries to create interference on your radio frequency. In the event of a power failure, some alarms are equipped with emergency batteries that guarantee continuous monitoring. If the internet connection is no longer available, a multi-operator SIM card inserted in the control panel takes its place. This SIM card is generally provided in the alarm kit , but not all alarms are equipped with it.

Alarm for the connected home: what advantages?

A connected home alarm is an internet-connected security system that communicates with a computer, a Smartphone or a tactile tablet through an application. It can be a presence or movement detector, an opening detector or a connected surveillance camera. In the event of an intrusion, the alarm or remote surveillance system alerts you with a notification on your Smartphone or via SMS, allowing you to react quickly and alert the police or your family members for verification.

With such a system, you are alerted in real time in the event of an intrusion and guarantee the security of your home remotely. For example, it is particularly useful when you are away from home so you can't hear the siren! In the case of a connected surveillance camera, you can even monitor the house live from your Smartphone, where and when you want it and, above all, if an intrusion is reported. You can thus avoid false alarms and call for help only in the event of an actual intrusion. You can also activate and deactivate the remote alarm, change the options through the application or view the recorded videos.

Unique essential requirements: your home must be equipped with Wi-Fi and you must have a Wi-Fi or 3G / 4G connection where you are to receive notifications in real time via the app. If you opt for a notification via SMS, a GSM network must be available in your location.
